Cabo Rojo Lighthouse Revisited

On 10 November 2010, we drove South to visit the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse again and to spend some time on the sheltered, beautiful, almost private beach behind the lighthouse. The first snorkeling foray was in water just a little too murky to see well. The second snorkeling attempt, on the other side of the bay, was much clearer, with the highlight being when Maura found a rock with 5 lobsters hiding under it.

Mayaguez Zoo -- Puerto Rico

The zoo in Mayaguez is supposedly the best zoo in Puerto Rico. Here are a few pictures. Not as many local species native to the island as I had hoped.

Arecibo Observatory

The world's largest radio telescope reflector sits over a limestone sinkhole in the mountains of Puerto Rico, south of the town of Arecibo. It was built in the 1960's and was also featured in the James Bond movie Golden Eye.

Camuy Caverns -- Puerto Rico

Drove to the western central region of Puerto Rico and toured Camuy Caverns today. The tour lasts about one hour and costs $15 per person. The western mountains of Puerto Rico are riddled with caverns and sinkholes. So far approximately 2,000 caverns are know and 500 of those have been explored. Camuy Caverns sit over the largest-known subterranean river in the world.
