Panama Canal Railway

A fellow traveler, looking for an English teaching job in Panama, answered an ad for a diesel mechanic.  Because of this, on 30 March, our second day in Panama, we rode across the Isthmus of Panama on a freight train with the Chief Engineer of the Panama Railway Company.  The trip is about 43 miles from Panama City to Colon, travels along the Canal, and takes roughly two hours each way.  Instead of going through the Canal, some freight is unloaded in the port and transported across by rail, then loaded on smaller ships for regional distribution.  The railroad has been working since about 2000.
