17 November 2009 – Day in Cap Haitien, Haiti

Woke up way too early and the roosters on shore were not even crowing yet. Then went back to sleep and woke up quite late. So it was 9:00 am before getting ashore in the dinghy. Rode to Cap Haitien on a truck filled with empty plastic cooking oil jugs from the shoreside cruise ship operation. With such poverty, almost everything in Haiti is recycled. A large, excited crowd was gathered downtown. Was it a riot or the coming revolution? No, it was merely a completely naked Haitian man jumping around like he was possessed. After awhile, some slow-moving municipal workers tried to catch him, but he took off running through the streets. The crowd followed. Maybe he was practicing for Carnival. Then, I trolled the streets of downtown Cap Haitien for Internet cafes. Out of five Internet cafes none of them actually worked very well. One finally was healthy enough to allow checking email. Not surprising, some of the offices I walked by were still using manual typewriters.
